I think I now have finally figured out a part of the puzzle that I have stuggled with. I recently had a client react very dramatically to images of a nursling feeding from its mom. The client "could not get over the idea" of her breasts being sexual. This really got me to thinking and I was gifted an "ah ha" moment.
We have the means to delay our fertility. We now can be sexual for many years before we become pregnant. This helps us entrench our attachment to our breasts as sexual objects. Before the advent of birth control the bulk of us would have become pregnant within a year of becoming sexual. Today some women have been having sex for 20 plus years before pregnancy. Also for some women breasts are a very large part of theirs and their partner's arousal or sexual satisfaction.
I am grateful to have this recognition for myself but now I need to take this one step further to learn how to help women and society feel more comfortable with the very lovely dual role of breasts.
